Adventure Weeks |
Description:
Adventure weeks occur every other week and are the core of our summer camp program. Each week will incorporate educational themes such as Geology, Botany, Wildlife, Ornithology, History, and Ecology into all of the activities offered at River Riders, including white water rafting, kayaking, tubing, canoeing, biking and hiking! Campers will engage in fun filled activities focused on identifying different species of rocks, tress, plants and birds while enjoying the excitement of the Harpers Ferry area. This summer you camper will take pleasure in all of our sunsational activities and accumulate a base of knowledge about earth related topics. These camps offer campers the opportunity to participate in all of the activities that we offer at River Riders - Minimum age is 9 years. Grades 4-11.The schedule for the typical Adventure Week is as follows: Monday: ![]() morning Harpers Ferry Hiking tour afternoon White Water Rafting Tuesday: morning Flat Water Tubing afternoon White Water Tubing Wednesday: morning Flat Water Kayaking afternoon White Water Kayaking Thursday: morning C&O Canal Biking tour afternoon Canoeing Friday: all day Shenandoah White Water Rafting Theme Descriptions: Geology: is the science and study of the solid matter that constitutes the Earth. Encompassing such things as rocks, soil, fossils, and gemstones, geology studies the composition, structure, physical properties, history, and the processes that shape Earth's components. Campers will study fossils, rock identification, animal tracks, and stone skipping. Dendrology & Botany: Dendrology is the science of trees, and more generally the study of woody plants. Woody plants may be trees, shrubs, and lianas. Botany is the scientific study of plant life. Botany covers a wide range of scientific disciplines that study plants, algae, and fungi including: structure, growth, reproduction, metabolism, development, diseases, and chemical properties and evolutionary relationships between the different groups. Campers will study tree and plant identification of native and invasive species, participate in a scavenger hunt, and will be creating a scrapbook of their findings. Wildlife: includes all non-domesticated plants, animals, and other organisms. Campers will observing the wildlife close to the river and surrounding area including deer, muskrat, birds, snakes and insects. They will learn to identify the different tracks, or footprints, these animals make. Respect for nature and its creatures will be taught as well as the importance of preservation and conservation of the outdoors. Ornithology:is the branch of zoology concerned with the study of birds. Campers will study the birds that live in the area such as herons and other water fowl as well as learn about the reintroduction of certain species like the bald eagle and peregrine falcons. History:is the study of the past. Campers were learn about the vast amount of history that has happened right here in Harpers Ferry including the buildings and businesses during the industrial revolution, Shenandoah City, the C & O Canal, and the abolitionist John Brown. The will take a trip to the Antietam Battlefield and the museum in Charles Town. Ecology:the scientific study of the distribution and abundance of living organisms and the interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment. The environment of an organism includes both physical properties, which can be described as the sum of local abiotic factors such as insolation (sunlight), climate, and geology, and biotic factors, which are other organisms that share its habitat or ecosystem (A natural unit consisting of all plants, animals and micro-organisms in an area functioning together with all the non-living physical factors of the environment.) Campers will study parts the river ecosystem such as the circle of life, water quality and flow, and invasive species. |

| Times: Monday-Friday - 8:45 AM-4:30 PM Drop off is from 8-9 am and pick up is from 4:30-5:30 pm unless other arrangements are made. |

| Liability Waiver: Liability Waivers must be read and completed for each camper. |
| Notes: Campers will be divided according to age and ability levels for activities. Staff members trained in each specific activity will accompany campers. Minimum age of 9. |
